My winter memoir and personal essay class will take place on Zoom on seven Tuesdays from 6pm to 7:30pm EST, Jan 5 to February 23 (skipping February 16). My spring memoir and personal essay writing class will take place on Zoom on seven Tuesdays May 4 to June 15 from 6pm to 7:30pm EST.
During class, we pay attention to things like tension, voice, plotting and structure. We look closely together at masterful personal essays and excerpts from excellent memoirs to see how they achieved their impact. And we have writers visit our zoom to discuss questions students have. Between classes, students will be tasked with writing one moment from their lives for thirty minutes a day — it’s harder than it sounds, and much, much more productive than it seems it would be.
